Benefit Concert for Grief Watch & The Dougy Center

In February 2011, Portland songwriter and performer Lincoln Crockett (www.lincolncrockett.com) and his wife Alicia lost their baby, Joseph Phoenix, shortly after childbirth. As they and their four year old son grieved they were buoyed by friends and family who introduced the family to two priceless resources: Grief Watch (www.griefwatch.com), a resource for dealing with loss, and The Dougy Center (www.dougy.org), supporting grieving children and families. These organizations not only give support to grieving families and children right here in Portland, OR, but from all over the country. Both groups provide invaluable information, knowledge and experience on how to grieve, how to heal, how to live again after the kinds of losses and tragedies people fear most.
The purpose of this benefit concert is:
1) to raise awareness of these fantastic, national-caliber resources right here in Portland, and
2) to support their important work.
As the Crockett’s shared their loss they realized that people around them are grieving, often alone, for lost babies, children, siblings, friends, parents and lives; almost NONE of them know about the help that is available from Grief Watch and the Dougy Center. Grief is too often hidden, distorted, avoided, turned into anger, blame, and debilitating, subtle, permanent hurt and it doesn’t have to be.
Crockett will perform solo as well as with the debut of a full ‘dream band’ – Lincoln Crockett & Enemies. Their music ranges from contemporary acoustic to bluegrass-inspired; to a full electric band that plays a high-end blend of rock and jazz. The organizers will also add a special guest opener, someone compatible with the cause who can add to the draw. Grief Watch and Dougy Center representatives will be on hand to provide information about their services and organizations. Full capacity at the Old Church is 300, tickets will be $15.
*All proceeds beyond expenses will be donated directly to Grief Watch & Dougy Center’s non-profit efforts.

One Artist, Many Passions
Lincoln Crockett is the real deal, a talented performer singing standout originals on mandolin & guitar, all while playing leads, rhythms and chords all at the same time. He holds audiences’ attention with the expansiveness in his voice and his ability to move a mountain of music through his instruments. Crockett has a style all his own he sometimes calls “progfolk.” He twists jazz, bluegrass, prog-rock and folk into an affecting set of wry soul-searching with uplifting spiritual flavor specific to no genre. The combined effect has garnered Crockett attention from within the music community in the Pacific Northwest, the reputation of being a “musician's musician” and devoted audience support.
Crockett is also a highly trained and experienced energy healer with a private practice in Portland. Sensitive to energies from a very young age, music became an expressive tool for bridging the gap between the world he could see and the world he could feel. His songs are often derived directly from his own personal healing process, and have gone on to touch a deep chord with thousands of listeners.
Crockett cut his chops as singer, songwriter and mandolin player for progressive bluegrass funhouse Cross-eyed Rosie, and helped turn this popular Portland, Oregon five-piece into the Northwest's premier group of its kind. On indefinite hiatus since 2008, CER remains popular, and when the band appeared at The Laurelthirst Pub in Portland on 9/11/10 the show was standing room only.
Crockett’s solo career began in earnest with the 2007 release of his full-length debut “Angels & Devils Alike”. The Oregonian said it “radiates all that's good about the progressive side of bluegrass,” while the Willamette Week called it “gorgeous.” Crockett then opened for Phish's Page McConnell at Portland's Aladdin Theater, had his song “When Will You Come Home” featured on KINK FM's Local Music Spotlight and placed his popular song “Sawdust Settler” on a compilation benefiting the Salmon Nation Project. Crockett became a quiet regional road-warrior, and “Angels & Devils Alike” eventually sold 1000 copies out of the back of his car, almost exclusively in the Pacific Northwest
Eventually, exhausted from the stress of touring, Crockett quietly released “In Pictures” and “Play In The Yard” and announced an extended sabbatical. Since returning to Portland, Crockett has divided his time between his energy healing practice, enjoying family life, limited performances, and giving lessons and workshops at Sound Roots School of Modern Music.
Over the course of his career Crockett has performed everywhere from national stages to theaters, clubs, bars, coffeehouses and house concerts. He has lent his skills to numerous Portland-area musicians, collaborating on stages, studios and projects with artists like Tony Furtado, Scott Law, Mike Midlo (of Pancake Breakfast), Nathaniel Talbot, Gideon Freudman (of Portland Cello Project), Will West, Mo Phillips, Brad Creel, Garett Brennan, and especially Chris Kokesh. Since 2008 Crockett has enjoyed a remarkable modern folk & bluegrass pairing in tours and performances with Kokesh, the award-winning singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist of nationally recognized folk group, Misty River. He has been on staff at the Sister’s Folk Festival Americana Songwriting Academy since 2009. Crockett is currently producing the studio debut recording of Portland folk songwriting guru Matt Meighan. In addition to solo performances, he can be found leading an electric fusion collaboration with a power trio backup-band of members of The Rocktet, as well as a bluegrass quartet dubbed Bloom Out Inside – go ahead, say it: “blue mountainside.” You can expect that Crockett will continue his course as a successful, independent, and uniquely Pacific Northwestern musician for a long time to come.
