March 6, 2000 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE " Tear Soup, affirms the bereaved, educates the unbereaved and is a building block for children." Portland, Oregon In a continuing effort to create healing resources for grieving families and to help teach persons about the grief process, the creator of When Hello Means Goodbye and Still to be Born, has just released the beautiful new family storybook, Tear Soup. In a charming, timeless, illustrated story, Portland Co-authors Pat Schwiebert and Chuck DeKlyen show how an individual moves through the suffering of a great loss. The book focuses on the day to day emotions of Grandy, the central figure in the story, rather than on her specific loss, and follows the old woman as she processes her memories and feelings and blends them into her own unique batch of tear soup. Tear Soup is designed to accurately depict the emotions and process of grief. It is based on Pat Schwiebert’s 25 years experience working directly with hospice and leading support groups for the bereaved. “Tear Soup springs from my continuing desire, for all of our sakes, to get the subject of grief out of the closet and onto the coffee table where people can recognize it and talk about it,” Schwiebert states. “The pages directly reflect the pain and emotion that so many of my friends have shared with me as I walked alongside them in their sorrow. But let us remember, grief does not just happen when we lose someone we love, it is a process we go through whenever we lose something or someone we are invested in.” Much has been written about the cycle of grief and the process of recovery, but this combination of a fresh new story paired with heart felt illustrations, makes Tear Soup different from other self help books. “What’s true about soup making is also true about grief. Soup was a way for us to draw it all together, to make the process individual, yet universal,” says co-author Chuck DeKlyen. “Soup takes time to simmer. Soup can be as simple as broth with a little flavoring or it can be heaped with a variety of ingredients that nourish the body and warm the soul.” Tear Soup is stitched in an 8.5” x 11” hardbound case, with 56 pages of rich color illustrations by illustrator Taylor Bills of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Included with the story are “Grandy’s Cooking Tips”, a helpful guide for families or professionals who are challenged by the needs of the bereaved. Helpful topics include: · If you are the cook · If your friend is the cook · Soup making and time · If a child is the cook · If there are two of you cooking. Tear Soup is currently available for both individual and bulk mail orders directly through Grief Watch. The cost is $19.95 plus shipping and handling.
